The wrong way to give gifts

As the holiday season approaches, we prepare ourselves for those awful gifts that require us to put on a brave face and show gratitude. Many people think money in a gift card or voucher is a disappointment, but it’s always better to let the recipient choose the gift than give them something that will be hidden away at the back of a closet.

What were some of the worst gifts you ever received for Christmas?

Many of us have at some point received Granny’s knitted bundle. It doesn’t matter if it’s a scarf so long it reaches the floor, or a hideous sweater with teddies all over it. It was knitted with love. You must wear it as soon as you unwrap it and throughout Granny’s stay. At least you’ll be warm. Check your boiler before winter arrives, or Granny may have to knit jumpers for everyone! If you want to give a gift that’s a little more stylish and contemporary, why not learn how to knit yourself with a Knitting Kit from Wool Couture?

The smellies/handkerchief combination and generic sets of toiletries are also terrible gifts that will end up in the back of the sock drawer for the next several decades. Men will probably find themselves with a pack of socks, or an ugly tie for work that they’ll never wear again.

Strange gifts include used cowboy boot dust, socks that are heated by batteries and even a toilet seat. Other real gems include:

  • A sweater that was worn and stained
  • Donations made in your name for a cause that you do not support
  • Sending gifts to people from your own Christmas gifts from last year!
  • Subscription to a weight-loss programme
  • Iron and ironing board
  • One slipper
  • Your mother-in-law’s book on etiquette.
  • A doorknob

Other truly horrible gifts being sold include:

  • Microphone Tongs
  • Moustache for your dog
  • A ball of rubber bands
  • Framed photos of people you don’t know!
  • Gift cards to places you never visit
  • Food that is past its expiry date.

Yes, these are all real gifts received by unsuspecting and unfortunate recipients.

It must be a contest to see who can come up with the weirdest and most wonderful gifts. This could be a tradition that we adults adopt, as these suggestions are surely better than a box of boring soap. Would you rather a deodorant spray set or a moustache for your dog?
